What is Chiropractic?

According to Stedman's Medical Dictionary for Health Professions and Nursing, chiropractic is defined as "a health care discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative powers of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated with the nervous system) and how that relationship affects both preservation and restoration of health."

The art of hands-on-therapy has been practiced for centuries. The profession known as "chiropractic" is relatively new, beginning about 125 years ago. The origination of chiropractic is accredited to D.D. Palmer from his work in the fields of anatomy and physiology as he furthered his education. He crossed paths with a deaf janitor and was able to restore his hearing with spinal manipulation. Thus, beginning the art and healing practices of chiropractic with the first chiropractic school. D.D. Palmer's son, B.J. Palmer furthered the development of the profession and took over the Palmer School of Chiropractic while his father helped in the foundation of more chiropractic schools throughout the country.

Chiropractic is now the largest performed healing art, second only to the practice of medicine. Focusing primarily on joint mobility and functional mechanics of the spine, chiropractors most utilize the "adjustment" as their tool. Adjusting is performed by adding an impulse into a joing using either the doctor's hands or a specifically designed instrument to induce and restore proper movement. Through years of development, ongoing research and general patient response it has been determined that chiropractic care is the number one preferred treatment for low back pain. Low back pain is the primary cause for lost time at work particularly in the military. It has also been documented that spinal manipulation provides almost immediate relief and improvement for cervicogenic headaches.

Chiropractic is also capable of helping other ailments. As the spine is intimately involved in proper nervous system function, general health and wellness can be improved with chiropractic care and attaining optimal mobility of the spinal joints. All of the body's systems are interrelated and to have all the systems working properly and in balance allows the body to be in a state of homeostasis. Chiropractic care can have a significant positive influence on many systems, including the musculoskeletal, nervous and circulatory systems. In conjunction with a healthy lifestyle a well-balanced body has the incredible ability to resist disease and discomfort.
